FAMILY RIGHTS LEDGER — PARENT RIGHTS & NEXT-STEP CHECKLIST General education. First edition: November 6, 2026. https://familyrightsledger.org/rights.html Use this as a question list for a qualified lawyer, not instructions to refuse lawful action. State law, court rules, case type and orders control the specific requirements. BEFORE A CASE / FIRST CONTACT [ ] Record worker name, agency, contact details, date and stated concern. [ ] Ask: Is this voluntary, court-ordered or based on an asserted emergency? [ ] Request copies of orders, rights notices and documents presented for signature. [ ] Ask what each consent, release or plan authorizes and how long it lasts. [ ] Request time to read and obtain legal advice before signing where possible. [ ] Do not assume every request is mandatory or every request may be refused. [ ] Keep original communications and a dated event log. Check recording restrictions. [ ] Find parent-defense counsel; ask about appointed counsel if proceedings begin. DURING A CASE [ ] Obtain petition, notices and signed orders through the proper route. [ ] Confirm hearing dates, attendance arrangements and all filing/review deadlines. [ ] Ask about appointed parent counsel and confirm whom every lawyer represents. [ ] Discuss access to evidence, witnesses, objections and correcting errors in the record. [ ] Flag interstate orders, Tribal connections, disability and language access needs. [ ] Separate agency requests, service plans and court orders. [ ] Preserve visitation, service participation and any barriers to compliance. [ ] Ask counsel how to challenge an order; an objection alone does not stay it. AFTER A CASE [ ] Obtain and read the final order; confirm exactly what ended and what remains. [ ] Ask whether separate custody, support, registry or administrative matters remain. [ ] Preserve originals, docket, correspondence, selected records and an evidence index. [ ] Ask about lawful records access, correction, administrative review or sealing. [ ] Check appeal, review and possible claim deadlines promptly with counsel. [ ] Do not assume an oversight complaint, media contact or records request extends deadlines. [ ] Keep child-identifying and restricted records out of public submissions.
